The Path to Launching Our Hybrid School!
When I first thought about starting a homeschool academy, it felt like a distant dream. I was happy working as an AG teacher at Tri-Valley, and the idea of opening my own school seemed far off. But as time went on, I began to see signs that this was the path I was meant to take.
After hearing from parents and neighbors who chose homeschooling, I started to feel a pull towards this new direction. My motivation became clearer when I encountered challenges related to my daughter’s educational needs. This experience was a significant turning point, prompting me to ensure that my children received an education that truly reflected our family’s values and faith.
The decision became clearer when I discovered the hybrid learning model. It seemed like the perfect blend of in-person and at-home education that could offer both structure and flexibility. Although I initially considered other ventures, like agritourism with my husband, the hybrid model resonated with me. It wasn’t something widely adopted in South Dakota at the time, but it was gaining traction elsewhere in the country.
With homeschooling reaching an all-time high and the hybrid model becoming more popular, I saw an opportunity to bring this approach to our community. Research, conferences, and connecting with others in the homeschooling community gave me the confidence to move forward.
Our school, the Buffalo Christian Homeschool Academy, will operate out of a converted farmhouse in Colton. Students will attend in-person classes on Mondays and Wednesdays, and the rest of the week will be dedicated to parent-led teaching. We’re excited to integrate an agricultural focus, including raising and processing chickens, and incorporating lessons on Native American history and state history.
I feel confident and at peace with this venture, knowing it’s guided by a higher purpose. As we prepare to open our doors, I trust that this is the path God has set for me and my family. The support from the homeschooling community has been incredible, and I’m excited to see how our academy will grow and serve our students and their families.
